Tjawina Porter Nampitjinpa creates impressive landscape paintings all related to the dreaming stories passed on through ancestry. Nampitjinpa possesses a distinct visual style, her complex and dynamic compositions are filled with careful arrangements of dottings, that seem to overlap and weave into one and other.
Nampitjinpa was born around 1940 in Tjukurrla, Western Australia. She is the sister of esteemed painter Esther Giles Nampitjinpa. Her family moved to Papunya, shortly after the community was established by the Australian government. The traces of symbolic markings on her work ultimately represent her ancestors presence on the lands. The artist is also renowned for her sculptural and basket-weaving work.
